Esau the engine c1905

On the footplate is Enoch Tempest, the contractor employed to build the reservoirs at Walshaw Dean. Seated next to him is his nephew (some say grandson), George Tempest.

On the right (back) is Fred Arthur Greenwood, bottom left Jimmy Duffy and on the right, Fred Powell who later became a Halifax tram driver.

The locomotive ran on a 3ft gauge and was one of around 15 used in the construction of reservoirs. The locomotives cost £550 each.

Enoch Tempest [1843-1908] was born in Haworth. He built several local reservoirs, including Walshaw Dean Reservoir. He lost much of his money in repairing the dams. The fault was later found to be caused by the geology of the area and not due to poor workmanship.
