Three or more people with a common interest can
start a section of the Lit and Sci society. Over the years there have been
14 different sections including beekeeping, Esperanto, Cinema, Literary,
Natural History. In 2000, Astronomy and Local History were the only sections
remaining. Many of the images on this site come from the Alice Longstaff
Collection and may also be seen at the regular "Hebden Heritage" exhibitions.
Membership in 1905 was 133 and reached a maximum
of 1,642 in 1943 before the advent of television. By the 75th
anniversary in 1980 at which Ted Hughes read some of his work,
numbers had fallen to less than 300. Now membership has stabilised
at around 100. |
